Then Jesus said, "Come to Me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. (NLT)
Focus on Jesus through the dangerous roads of life
Ice sparkled on the black tarmac road as we drove through the Rocky Mountains one dark, wintry night. There were no bright stars in the inky black sky. There were no other vehicles on the road that night. Alone we drove through ominous threatening avalanche area. The car headlights pierced through the darkness. Signs on the side of the road warned us, "No stopping. Avalanche area." This was a very dangerous road at this time of year.
"Just get through this and everything will be fine," I tried to convince myself.
Fear mounted when I heard the car motor struggle and felt the vehicle slow down.
"No stopping. Avalanche area." The signs repeated the terror.
I looked at the huge mountains, which encroached the road and I saw the ominous snow packs. This was an impossible situation. The car was unable to climb the mountain road. We would be stranded in the freezing night. No one would know we were in trouble, so no one would be able to help us. Then a song entered my mind,
"Anything, anything. My God can do anything.
He made the world and all there in.
He saved my soul from every sin.
My God can do anything.
He healed the sick. He raised the dead.
My God can do anything."
I began singing and soon my husband joined me.
Strangely, the car motor revved again. The wheels started to turn and the vehicle continued to move slowly through the treacherous area.
Whenever we stopped singing, the car threatened to give up. When we started to sing, the car slowly moved on.
Was it the singing that had the power? No. Was it the car that had the power? No. What really changed, was our focus. Originally we focused on our problem and the impossibilities that went with it. When we changed focus to the LORD our God, and His power and possibilities, His peace flooded our souls. Faith was given to us and He carried us safely through.
Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith (Heb 12:2)
